Credit Intermediaries Must Register with Finanstilsynet

Finanstilsynet mandates that all credit intermediaries must register with the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority by 20 November 2026, significantly expanding previous light-touch regulations. Companies operating without registration by the deadline face fines or imprisonment of up to four months, while certain intermediaries will additionally fall under a new anti-money laundering regulation effective 10 July 2027. The authority clarifies that any business facilitating loan procurement or financing for purchased goods qualifies as a credit intermediary subject to these requirements.

Sector News 06-05-2026 From 20 November 2026, credit intermediaries must be registered with Finanstilsynet. Credit intermediaries are companies that help customers find loans, provide them with information about loans, or assist them in obtaining a loan on behalf of a lender. Previously, credit intermediaries were only subject to a few rules, for example regarding the information that must be provided before a loan agreement. Now, credit intermediaries must also register with Finanstilsynet.

Please note that companies operating as credit intermediaries without having applied by 20 November 2026 may be subject to a fine or imprisonment of up to four months.

Finanstilsynet draws attention to the fact that certain credit intermediaries are covered by the new anti-money laundering regulation, which applies from 10 July 2027.

When are you a credit intermediary? You are, for example, a credit intermediary if you sell a product and simultaneously present the customer with a loan that can be used to finance the purchase. This applies, for example, to an optician offering financing for new glasses, or an electronics store offering financing for a television. This applies both in physical stores and in online shops.

The decisive factor is that you facilitate the loan – either by presenting it or by assisting the customer in concluding the loan agreement on behalf of the lender.
