The characteristics of this new monetary sign, defined by Resolution No. 4143 of November 5, 1986 of the Ministry of Finance, are as follows:

  1. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS Alloy: Alpaca (65% copper, 20% zinc, and 15% nickel) Weight: 8.4 grams Diameter: 26.5 mm Thickness: 1.7 mm The $50 coins have a circular contour with a smooth edge, on which the words have been engraved: ** Mint ** Freedom and Order

OBVERSE Inside a circle appear: The facade of the National Capitol, below the legend: "NATIONAL CAPITOL BOGOTÁ" and nine stars that symbolize the Sovereign States that integrated the Colombian Federation. Around the central circle appear the following legends: Top: CENTENNIAL OF THE NATIONAL CONSTITUTION – 1886 Bottom: 1936 – CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM

  3. REVERSE The Coat of Arms of the Republic of Colombia is observed, below the face value of the coin expressed in numbers and the word pesos; around, in the upper part the words "REPUBLIC OF COLOMBIA" and below the mint year.

MINTING 1989 In order to facilitate the handling of metallic money and in accordance with Resolution No. 872 of March 10, 1989 of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, the Mint minted starting in 1989 a new series of $50 coins in a smaller size and with characteristics different from the signs minted until 1988. On December 1, 1989, the new $50 coins were put into circulation.

MINTING 2006 On June 6, 2006, $50 coins manufactured by the Mint were put into circulation, with a mint year of 2006. These monetary signs have the same design and identical general characteristics as those identified with the mint year 2005.

MINTING 2007 - NEW ALLOY On September 26, 2007, $50 coins minted by the Mint were put into circulation, with a mint year of 2007, which maintain the same current characteristics of design, diameter, and thickness. These coins will have an alloy of nickel-plated steel, so the weight in grams (gr.) remains at 4.07+/-3% and will circulate simultaneously with the Alpaca alloy version.

MINTING 2008 On February 1, 2008, $50 coins minted by the Mint were put into circulation, with the year 2008, both of Alpaca alloy and plated in steel. These monetary signs have the same design and identical general characteristics as those identified with the mint year 2007.

MINTING 2011 On November 16, 2011, $50 coins minted by the Mint were put into circulation, with a mint year of 2011, of nickel-plated steel alloy. These monetary signs have the same design and identical general characteristics as those identified with the mint year 2010.

MINTING 2012 - NEW FAMILY On June 13, 2012, the Bank of the Republic put into circulation a new $50 coin which is part of a new family of coins, whose characteristics were established by External Resolution No. 4 of 2012 of the Board of Directors. The thematic orientation of the new coins confirms the Bank of the Republic's interest in the promotion and preservation of our natural resources and sustainable development.

  1. OBVERSE It has a circular frame in high relief defined with a flat and smooth surface, followed by a fillet or succession of points. In the upper semicircle of the coin, a flat and shiny smooth zone with the texts Spectacled Bear and in microtext the scientific name of this species. In the center of the coin is the image of the Spectacled Bear, a species that inhabits the humid forests located in the Andes mountain range, which is endangered. In the lower left part there are fine horizontal lines that disperse towards the right part.

  2. REVERSE It has a circular frame in high relief defined with a flat and smooth surface, followed by a fillet or succession of points and then fine lines in high relief in the form of waves, whose set forms a circle, within which is found in the upper part, the text “REPUBLIC OF COLOMBIA” and in the lower part the year of issue in high relief. In the center, the denomination in Arabic numerals is appreciated and below the word “PESOS”.

  3. DISTRIBUTION The Bank of the Republic will deliver these coins to the public and banking establishments in bags, which will have the following presentation:
