Law 56 of July 11, 2017 Establishing the Participation of Women in State Boards of Directors

The Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Costa Rica enacted Law 56 on July 11, 2017, to mandate the inclusion of women in state corporate governance structures. The legislation requires that state-owned enterprises and entities in which the state holds a majority interest ensure a minimum percentage of female representation on their boards of directors. This measure aims to promote gender equality and increase women's participation in decision-making roles within the public sector.
