BRPD-1 Circular Letter No. 10: Precautionary Steps for Gas and Energy Saving Amidst Current Geopolitical Situations

Bangladesh Bank issued Circular Letter No. 10 to mandate all scheduled banks to implement immediate precautionary measures for reducing gas and electricity consumption across their offices, branches, and canteens. The directive requires minimizing electrical appliance usage, setting air conditioning temperatures no lower than 25°C, and substituting gas with alternative energy sources during peak hours. This circular fully updates and supersedes the previous guidance issued under Circular Letter No. 37 dated 07 May 2022.

To all Scheduled Banks operating in Bangladesh. Subject, Precautionary steps for gas and energy saving amidst current geopolitical situations. Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the resulting severe energy crisis, the government has implemented various precautionary measures to reduce gas and electricity consumption. 2. Accordingly, the Circular Department, Branch, Sub-Branch and other departments of the Scheduled Banks have been instructed to take necessary steps to reduce gas and electricity consumption: K) Electricity saving: Use of electric lights, fans, air conditioners (AC) and other electrical appliances in offices should be minimized. Electricity consumption during office hours should be reduced and unnecessary lights and fans should be turned off. The temperature of AC should not be set below 25 degrees Celsius. L) Gas saving: To reduce gas consumption in banks, proper and scientific use of gas should be ensured. If gas consumption is high during office hours, gas should be minimized in canteens (cafeterias). Gas consumption should be minimized by using alternative energy sources. M) Administrative measures: Necessary and effective arrangements should be made in the bank's administration and relevant departments to monitor and control electricity and gas consumption. In this regard, self-inspection and regular monitoring should be conducted. Gas consumption in electricity generation should be minimized. 3. In this regard, the Circular Letter No. 37 of the Branch Circular dated 07 May 2022 titled "Precautionary steps for gas and electricity saving and reduction of carbon emissions" has been fully updated and revised. 4.
