The Banco de Moçambique issued Notice No. 15/GBM/2017 on June 16, 2017, to introduce the 2017 series of Metical banknotes on both polymer and paper substrates. The regulation mandates the issuance of six denominations (20, 50, and 100 meticais on polymer; 200, 500, and 1000 meticais on paper), each with specified dimensions, predominant colors, security features, and thematic designs. These notes enter circulation immediately while maintaining mandatory legal tender status alongside existing currency throughout Mozambique's national territory.

SUBJECT: INTRODUCTION OF THE 2017 SERIES OF METICAL BANKNOTES
Whereas it is necessary to continue supplying the national economy with high-quality banknotes through the introduction of the 2017 series of the Metical, and in exercise of the powers conferred upon me by Articles 1 and 2 of Law No. 1/91, of January 9, combined with subparagraphs (f) and (g) of paragraph 1 of Article 47 of Law No. 1/92, of January 3, I hereby determine:
CHAPTER I
ISSUANCE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF METICAL BANKNOTES ON POLYMER SUBSTRATE
Article 1 (Issuance of Metical banknotes on polymer)
Metical banknotes on polymer substrate are issued, with the following face values:
a) Twenty meticais 20 meticais; b) Fifty meticais 50 meticais; c) One hundred meticais 100 meticais.
Article 2 (Common characteristics of polymer banknotes)
a) Text: “BANCO DE MOÇAMBIQUE”; b) Face value of the banknote in words; c) Logo of the Banco de Moçambique; d) Date of issuance: “16 DE JUNHO DE 2017”; e) Signature, by seal, of the Governor of the Banco de Moçambique; f) Face value of the banknote in figures, at the bottom right corner; g) Series designation and numbering vertically and horizontally, on the left and right sides of the banknote, respectively; h) Identification element for denominations for visually impaired persons, to the left of the words “BANCO DE MOÇAMBIQUE”; i) Portrait of the first President of Mozambique, Samora Moisés Machel; j) Text: “SAMORA MOISÉS MACHEL, PRIMEIRO PRESIDENTE DE MOÇAMBIQUE”, below the respective portrait; k) Shaded image of the first President of Mozambique, Samora Moisés Machel; l) Transparent window, above the shaded image of the first President of Mozambique, in the middle of which appears the face value of the banknote; m) Semi-transparent window, in the shape of the Bank's logo, with color variations when viewed from different angles, flanking the transparent window; and n) Theme of the banknote: History of Mozambique.

Article 3 (Specific characteristics of each polymer banknote)
a) Dimensions: 141 x 65 millimeters; b) Predominant color: violet with varied tones; and c) Fauna: pala-palas.

a) Dimensions: 147 x 65 millimeters; b) Predominant color: red with varied tones; c) Half window, below the series designation and number horizontally; and d) Fauna: giraffes.
CHAPTER II
ISSUANCE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF METICAL BANKNOTES ON PAPER SUBSTRATE
Article 4 (Issuance of Metical banknotes on paper)
Metical banknotes on paper substrate are issued, with the following face values:
a) Two hundred meticais 200 meticais; b) Five hundred meticais 500 meticais; c) One thousand meticais 1000 meticais.
Article 5 (Common characteristics of paper banknotes)
a) Text: “BANCO DE MOÇAMBIQUE”; b) Face value of the banknote in words; c) Date of issuance: “16 DE JUNHO DE 2017”; d) Signature, by seal, of the Governor of the Banco de Moçambique; e) Portrait of the first President of Mozambique, Samora Moisés Machel; f) Text: “SAMORA MOISÉS MACHEL, PRIMEIRO PRESIDENTE DE MOÇAMBIQUE”, below the respective portrait; g) Watermark consisting of the image of the first President of Mozambique, Samora Moisés Machel, visible when held against light; h) Face value of the banknote in figures, within the watermark area; i) Face value of the banknote in figures, at the top left and bottom right corners; j) Series designation and numbering vertically and horizontally, on the left and right sides of the banknote, respectively; k) Identification element for denominations for visually impaired persons, at the bottom left corner; l) Security thread, incorporated vertically, bearing the words “BM” and the face value of the banknote; and m) Theme of the banknote: History of Mozambique.

a) Dimensions: 150 x 65 millimeters; b) Predominant color: blue with varied tones; c) Logo of the Banco de Moçambique, on the obverse; d) Optical Variable Ink (OVI), color-shifting ink element, in the shape of the Bank's logo, to the left of the portrait of the first President of Mozambique, on the obverse; e) Latent image “200” at the bottom right corner of the portrait of the first President of Mozambique; and f) Fauna: lions.
a) Dimensions: 153 x 65 millimeters; b) Predominant color: purple with varied tones; c) Optical Variable Ink (OVI), color-shifting ink element, in the shape of the Bank's logo, to the left of the portrait of the first President of Mozambique, Samora Moisés Machel, on the obverse; d) Latent image “500” at the bottom right corner of the portrait of the first President of Mozambique, Samora Moisés Machel; and e) Fauna: buffaloes.
a) Dimensions: 156 x 65 millimeters; b) Predominant color: green with varied tones; c) Optical Variable Ink (OVI), color-shifting ink element, oval-shaped, with the logo of the Banco de Moçambique and a dynamic effect of the words “BM” and “MIL”, situated to the left of the portrait of the first President of Mozambique, on the obverse; d) Color-shifting ink element, incorporating the Bank's logo to the right, with a dynamic effect of the acronym “BM” and the number “1000”, on the obverse; e) Latent image “1000” below the signature, by seal, of the Governor of the Banco de Moçambique, on the obverse; f) Varnish featuring diamonds on the horizontal edges and the words “BM” and “MIL” on the vertical edges, on the reverse; and g) Fauna: elephants.
CHAPTER III
FINAL PROVISIONS
Article 7 (Date of issuance and entry into circulation)
The Metical banknotes provided for in this Notice are issued and enter circulation on June 16, 2017.
Article 8 (Simultaneous circulation)
The Metical banknotes in circulation as of the date of entry into force of this Notice continue to have mandatory legal tender status and unlimited and full liberatory value within the national territory.
Article 9 (Entry into force)
This Notice enters into force immediately.
Article 10 (Clarification of doubts)
Any doubts arising from the interpretation and application of this Notice shall be submitted to the Currency Issuance Department of the Banco de Moçambique.
