The Parliament of Sri Lanka enacted this legislation to establish the Securities and Exchange Commission as the primary regulatory body for the national securities market. The Act mandates the Commission to license stock exchanges, brokers, dealers, and unit trust managers while registering market intermediaries to ensure fair trading and investor protection. It further empowers the Commission to conduct inspections, levy a cess for market development, and administer a compensation fund to reimburse investors suffering financial losses from licensed entity defaults.
