ESMA Report on MiFID II Sanctions and Measures Imposed in 2022
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) published its annual report detailing sanctions and measures imposed by national competent authorities under the MiFID II framework during 2022. The data reveals that while the total number of sanctions decreased to 281 across 25 Member States, the aggregate value of administrative fines rose to EUR 21,034,117. ESMA attributes the reduction in sanction counts to harmonized enforcement practices and cautions that the increased fine totals are driven by high penalties imposed by a few authorities.
