Decree No. 2004-1040 of November 23, 2004 Authorizing the Issuance of New Ariary Banknotes (1,000, 500, 200, and 100) by the Central Bank of Madagascar

The Central Bank of Madagascar, pursuant to Decree No. 2004-1040 of November 23, 2004, authorizes the issuance of new Ariary banknotes in denominations of 1,000, 500, 200, and 100. The decree establishes initial circulation dates of November 25, 2004, for the 200 and 100 notes, and December 20, 2004, for the 1,000 and 500 notes. It further mandates that existing Malagasy Franc banknotes of 5,000, 2,500, 1,000, and 500 retain cumulative legal tender status alongside the new notes upon immediate effect following broadcast or posted publication.

DECREE NO. 2004-1040 OF NOVEMBER 23, 2004 Authorizing the Issuance of New Types of Ariary Banknotes (1,000, 500, 200, and 100) by the Central Bank of Madagascar (Official Journal No. 2944 of December 6, 2004, p. 4980)

Article 1. The Central Bank of Madagascar shall issue new types of banknotes in denominations of ARIARY 1,000, ARIARY 500, ARIARY 200, and ARIARY 100, the characteristics of which are set forth in the annex to this Decree; Article 2. The initial issuance dates for these banknotes are set at November 25, 2004, for the ARIARY 200 and ARIARY 100 banknotes, and at December 20, 2004, for the ARIARY 1,000 and ARIARY 500 banknotes. Article 3. The former banknotes of 5,000 FMG issued pursuant to Decree No. 95-263 of April 4, 1995, and 2,500 FMG issued pursuant to Decree No. 98-421 of June 11, 1998, as well as the former banknotes of 1,000 FMG and 500 FMG issued pursuant to Decree No. 94-546 of September 16, 1994, shall retain their legal tender status cumulatively with the new types of banknotes defined in Article 1 above. Article 4. Due to urgency and in accordance with the provisions of Article 6 of Ordinance No. 62-041 of September 19, 1962, regarding general provisions of domestic law and private international law, this Decree shall enter into force immediately upon its radio and/or television broadcast publication or posting, independently of its insertion in the Official Journal of the Republic. Article 5. The Minister of Economy, Finance and Budget, the Minister of Telecommunications, Posts and Communication, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Madagascar are each charged with executing this Decree within their respective areas of responsibility.
