Extending the Tourism Initiative Work Period Until December 2014

The Central Bank of Egypt, through its Circular No. 130 dated March 13, 2013, is extending the tourism initiative until December 2014 due to the sector's economic importance and foreign currency contribution. The initiative now includes air transport in addition to hotels, tourism projects (excluding those for sale), travel and booking services, tourism transport, restaurants, beverages, and entertainment in tourist areas. Furthermore, the period for applying the fourth clause, which allows for reduced interest rates without a minimum, ends in March 2015, with banks still required to assess each case individually.

Greetings,

Referring to the tourism sector support initiative issued by my circular No. (130) dated March 13, 2013, and given the importance of the tourism sector as a pillar of the economy and a source of foreign currency, it has been decided to extend the period of the aforementioned initiative until December 2014, taking into account the following:

  • Adding air transport activity to the scope of the initiative's application, in addition to the activities mentioned therein, which are "Accommodation hotels and tourism projects (excluding those for sale), travel and booking services, tourism trips, land tourism transport, restaurants, beverages, and entertainment activities in tourist areas".

  • Confirming that the period for applying the fourth clause of the aforementioned initiative, which states "Reducing the return rate without commitment to a minimum, and without including the client among adjustment clients in case of pricing below the credit and discount rate", ends in March 2015.

  • Confirming that the determinants mentioned in the initiative are indicative determinants, through which banks study each case individually and make the appropriate decision.

Please accept my highest regards,

Hisham Ramz Abdel Hafez
