The National Bank of Ethiopia issued Directive NBE/INT/13/2026 to liberalize interest rates by allowing licensed banks to freely determine deposit and lending rates based on market forces. Banks must establish written rate-setting criteria, submit newly set rates within five working days, and report monthly weighted average rates to the regulator within seven working days. This directive repeals all prior interest rate regulations, applies to both conventional and interest-free banks, and takes effect on January 9, 2026.
