Regulation (NAP) – Bank Identification Number – NIB

The Central Bank of São Tomé and Príncipe mandates the adoption of the Bank Identification Number (NIB) to securely and unequivocally identify account holders at Credit Institutions. This numerical identifier follows a standardized 21-digit structure comprising national institution codes, branch codes, account numbers, and control digits. The regulation takes effect on January 2, 2003, to facilitate automated banking operations and enhance transaction security for both clients and financial institutions.

NAP

In order to facilitate the automatic processing of banking operations, given the resulting advantages for both clients and banks, as it allows an increase in transaction security, the Central Bank of São Tomé and Príncipe, exercising the competence attributed to it by its Organic Law, determines:

ARTICLE 1

a) The NIB (Bank Identification Number) is adopted in order to identify, securely and unequivocally, the holders of accounts opened at Credit Institutions.

a) Thus, the NIB is a numerical information element that follows the following structure:
