CB Circular No. 11 of 2026 - Foreign Currency Export and Import Measures

Effective immediately, all exports and imports of foreign cash by commercial banks must be communicated in writing to the Bank of Zambia prior to the transaction, detailing amounts, TPINs, denominations, logistics, purpose, and destination. Declarations must be addressed to the Director of the Statistics Department, with the Director of Prudential Supervision copied, and each declaration must cover cash from a single commercial bank. Mandatory electronic submission of this information via the e-BoP monitoring system is required, and comprehensive records must be maintained for potential inspection by the Bank of Zambia, Zambia Revenue Authority, or law enforcement agencies.

  1. All exports and imports of foreign cash must be communicated in writing to the Bank of Zambia prior to the export and import taking place. This communication should outline, among other things, the amount, Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN), denominations, transportation and logistical arrangements, the purpose of the export and import, the intended destination for exports or source country for imports, and all relevant supporting contractual documentation.
  2. Please address the letter to the following addressee with the Director – Prudential Supervision, kept in copy: The Director Statistics Department Bank of Zambia Bank Square, Cairo Road PO Box 30080 Lusaka Attention: Assistant Director – Balance of Payments and Debt
  3. Mandatory submission of information on all foreign cash exported and imported, along with their respective destinations and source countries, to be provided on the electronic balance of payments (e-BoP) monitoring system.
  4. Each export and import declaration should consist of cash information from a single commercial bank. ...2/-

Maintenance of a comprehensive record of all foreign cash exports and imports is mandatory, as these records may be subject to inspection by the Bank of Zambia, Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) or other law enforcement agencies Please note that the Bank of Zambia will notify ZRA in writing of the intended cash exports and imports by the relevant commercial bank. Please find attached the Cash Repatriation Form and the template letter for submitting export and import information. Kindly be advised accordingly.
