Circular 8/2025 — Withdrawal from Circulation of 20 Peso Type F Banknotes

The Bank of Mexico withdraws 20 peso Type F banknotes from circulation, requiring credit institutions to cease making them available to the public and to deposit them with the central bank or its correspondents. These banknotes retain their legal tender status and must be accepted by credit institutions. The measures take effect on October 10, 2025.

Friday, October 10, 2025 OFFICIAL GAZETTE 143 BANK OF MEXICO CIRCULAR 8/2025 addressed to credit institutions, regarding the Withdrawal from Circulation of 20 Peso Type F Banknotes.

At the margin a logo, which says: Bank of Mexico.- "2025, Year of the Indigenous Woman".

CIRCULAR 8/2025 SUBJECT: WITHDRAWAL FROM CIRCULATION OF 20 PESO TYPE F BANKNOTES

TO CREDIT INSTITUTIONS:

The Bank of Mexico, based on the provisions of articles 28, paragraphs seventh and eighth, of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, 2nd, 3rd, fraction I, 4th, 24, paragraphs first and second, and 25 of the Bank of Mexico Law, 48 and 48 Bis 1 of the Credit Institutions Law, 1st, 4th, paragraphs first and fourth, 8th, paragraphs fourth and eighth, 10, paragraph first, 16 Bis, fraction II, and 17, fraction I, of the Internal Regulations of the Bank of Mexico, as well as Second, fractions III and X, of the Agreement on the Assignment of Administrative Units of the Bank of Mexico, has resolved to withdraw from circulation banknotes of the denomination of 20 pesos type F.

From this date, credit institutions in the country will be obligated to refrain from making the aforementioned banknotes available to the public, and to proceed to deposit them in this Central Bank or its correspondents, classifying them as "Banknotes in Process of Withdrawal and/or Demonetized" in accordance with what is established in articles 60, 63, 68 and 69 of Circular 3/2025 regarding the Provisions on matters of cash operations, correspondent banking, and handling of presumably counterfeit or altered pieces.

Without prejudice to the foregoing, banknotes of the denomination of twenty pesos, type F (key 308) will retain their liberatory power as established in article 4 of the Monetary Law of the United Mexican States, so they must be invariably accepted by credit institutions.

It should be mentioned that based on the 13th, fraction III, of the "Policies for the public consultation of general provisions issued by the Bank of Mexico", the provisions referred to in this circular were exempted from the public consultation process.

Finally, the provisions referred to in this communication enter into force on October 10, 2025.
