Notice 616 Sales of Coins or Medals

The Monetary Authority of Singapore issued Notice 616 pursuant to Section 54A of the Banking Act to regulate the sale of numismatic items by financial institutions. The notice explicitly prohibits banks from selling commemorative coins or medals to the public. However, it permits the sale of genuine coins that are recognized as legal tender.

MAS 616 11 Nov 2002 NOTICE TO BANKS BANKING ACT, CAP 19 (MAS 616 dated 1 Nov 1983 is cancelled.) Sales of Coins or Medals This notice is issued pursuant to Section 54A of the Banking Act (Cap 19). Banks are not permitted to sell commemorative coins or medals. However, the sale of genuine coins which are legal tender is permitted. Last modified on 19/3/2007
