Operational and Service External Circular DEP-498, Subject 15: 5, 10, and 20 Peso Metal Coins Minted from 1989

Subject 15: 5, 10, and 20 Peso Metal Coins Minted from 1989.

The Department of Issuance and Programming issues this circular which constitutes Subject 15: “5, 10, and 20 Peso Metal Coins Minted from 1989”, which replaces Operational and Service External Circular DTE-190 Subject 41: “NEW METAL COINS” dated April 14, 2025. This is due to the change in area responsible for this regulation.

Likewise, the content is adjusted to remove information corresponding to the 50 peso coin, which is incorporated into Operational and Service External Circular DEP-497 Subject 14: “50 Peso Metal Coin” and only the historical record of the characteristics of the 5, 10 and 20 peso denominations minted from 1989 is preserved, which are no longer produced.

With the aim of facilitating the handling of metallic money and in accordance with Resolution No. 872 of March 10, 1989 of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, the Coin Factory minted from the year 1989 a new series of $5, $10 and $20 coins in smaller sizes and with different characteristics than the signs minted until the year 1988.

On July 10, 1989, the new $5 and $10 coins were put into circulation and from December 1st of the same year, the $20 coins were placed.

1. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

All these new monetary signs have a circular contour with a flat edge and a grooved rim.

2. OBVERSE AND REVERSE

The four coins present on the obverse the coat of arms of Colombia, surrounded by the legend “Republic of Colombia” and the year of minting 1989.

On the reverse the denomination in Arabic numerals, below the word “pesos” and the set surrounded by an open laurel wreath.

3. DISTRIBUTION

The Bank of the Republic delivered these coins to the public and to banking establishments in bags or in cartridges packaged in boxes, according to the stock in each office, with the following characteristics:

MINTING 1991 In the year 1991, $5, $10 and $20 coins made by the Coin Factory were put into circulation, with a minting year of 1991. These monetary signs have the same design and identical general characteristics as those identified with the minting year 1990.

MINTING 1992 In the year 1992, $5, $10 and $20 coins made by the Coin Factory were put into circulation, with a minting year of 1992. These monetary signs have the same design and identical general characteristics as those identified with the minting year 1991.

MINTING 1993 In the year 1993, $5, $10 and $20 coins made by the Coin Factory were put into circulation, with a minting year of 1993. These monetary signs have the same design and identical general characteristics as those identified with the minting year 1992.

MINTING 1994 In the year 1994, $10 and $20 coins made by the Coin Factory were put into circulation, with a minting year of 1994. These monetary signs have the same design and identical general characteristics as those identified with the minting year 1993.

MINTING 2003 In the year 2003, $20 coins made by the Coin Factory were put into circulation, with a minting year of 2003. These monetary signs have the same design and identical general characteristics as those identified with the minting year 1994.
