Redeem Your Invalid Banknotes – Fee Increase on 1 September 2026
The Riksbank announces that the fee for redeeming invalid banknotes will increase from 200 to 300 SEK per application starting 1 September 2026 to cover administrative costs. The central bank also proposes to cease the redemption of banknotes that have been invalid for more than 10 years, with this change expected to take effect in 2027. Holders are urged to exchange their old notes before the fee hike, as 3.9 billion SEK in invalid currency remains unredeemed since the previous exchange period.
News Since the banknote and coin exchange 2015–2017, invalid banknotes worth 3.9 billion have gone unredeemed. Take the opportunity to redeem your old banknotes before 1 September 2026, when the fee will increase.

For invalid banknotes submitted from 1 September 2026 onwards, the fee will increase from the current 200 SEK to 300 SEK per application. This is done with regard to the administrative costs of handling the cases. The Riksbank has also sent out a proposal for consultation on ceasing the redemption of banknotes that have been invalid for more than 10 years in 2027. Read more about the proposal here.
