BCB Resolution No. 585 — Standard Format for Identifying Bank Accounts in Brazil for International Fund Transfers (IBAN Format) and Regulation of Its Use

This resolution establishes the ISO 13616 (IBAN) standard as the mandatory format for identifying bank accounts maintained in Brazil for international fund transfers. It defines the 29-character IBAN structure, including country code, check digits, ISPB, branch number, account number, account type, and holder identification. Financial institutions are required to provide IBAN identifiers to clients upon request and to accept transfers using this format. The resolution revokes Circular No. 3,625 of February 14, 2013, and enters into force on the date of its publication.

The Collegiate Board of the Central Bank of Brazil, in a session held on August 21, 2026, based on art. 10 of Law No. 10,214, of March 27, 2001, on arts. 5, caput, items I, VIII to XI, and § 4, and 14, § 2, of Law No. 14,286, of December 29, 2021, and having in view the provisions of arts. 3, 5, caput, item I, 9 and 12 of CMN Resolution No. 4,952, of September 30, 2021, and arts. 3, caput, items II and III, and 4, caput, item VI, letter “d”, of CMN Resolution No. 5,042, of November 25, 2022,

R E S O L V E:

Art. 1. This Resolution provides for the use of the ISO 13616 standard (International Bank Account Number – IBAN) as the standard format for identifying bank accounts maintained in Brazil for international fund transfers, referred to as IBAN format for the purposes of this Resolution.

Art. 2. The IBAN format, composed of twenty-nine characters, follows the following formation criteria:

I - two alphanumeric characters corresponding to the country code, according to ISO 3166-1 standard;

II - two check digits (mod 97), according to ISO 7064 standard;

III - eight alphanumeric characters corresponding to the Participant Identifier with the Central Bank of Brazil for the Brazilian Payments System – ISPB, according to the lists of participants of the Reserve Transfer System – STR and the Instant Payments System – SPI published on the Central Bank of Brazil website;

IV - five numeric characters corresponding to the bank branch identification (without check digit);

V - ten numeric characters corresponding to the customer account number (with check digit);

VI - one alphanumeric character corresponding to the account type, according to the types dictionary of the National Financial System Services Catalog (second character); and

VII - one alphanumeric character corresponding to the account holder identification, according to the order in the holder listing.

§ 1. The account holder identification, referred to in item VII of the caput, shall be carried out by:

I - assigning the numerals “1” to the first or sole holder, “2” to the second holder and so on, up to the ninth holder; or

II - assigning the letters “A” to the tenth holder, “B” to the eleventh and so on, using the alphabetical characters from “A” to “Z” (including “K”, “W” and “Y”).

§ 2. The validation of the standard format must not differentiate uppercase and lowercase characters.

§ 3. Numeric fields must, whenever necessary, be filled with leading zeros.

§ 4. The presentation of the IBAN format must be done in groups of four characters separated by space, with all characters in uppercase, in order to facilitate its automation and reading, including electronic reading.

Art. 3. Financial institutions and other institutions authorized to operate by the Central Bank of Brazil, with reference to international fund transfers for credit to their clients, must:

I - provide the account identification in IBAN format to their clients, at any time, upon their request; and

II - accept transfers carried out using the IBAN format, performing the validations under their responsibility.

Art. 4. Circular No. 3,625, of February 14, 2013, published in the Official Gazette of the Union on February 18, 2013, is hereby revoked.

Art. 5. This Resolution enters into force on the date of its publication.
