K100 NOTE DESIGN FEATURING SIR JULIUS CHAN “The names Kina and Toea were carefully chosen. They were not imposed or borrowed. They came from us.”

• Governor Elizabeth Genia. “Know Your Currency - Save lo Moni Bilong Yu” 01 The new K100 banknote (redesign) featuring Sir. Julius Chan was officially released into circulation on the 27th of January, 2026. It was issued in honor of Late Sir Julius Chan who was the first Finance Minister and the second Prime Minister of PNG. The issuance was a national tribute to his significant contributions to PNG’s economic foundations and a reminder to future generation of his legacy. This series is a regular/standard issuance going forward.

• Governor Elizabeth Genia. 02 K100 Note “Know Your Currency - Save lo Moni Bilong Yu” Sir Julius Chan Role: PNG’s First Finance Minister from 1973-1975 Major Achievement: Introduced the national currency, the Kina and Toea, replacing Australian dollars. Significance: Laid the groundwork for PNG’s independent monetary/banking system and financial policy. Featuring his portrait was a national tribute to his significant contributions to PNG’s economic foundations and a reminder to future generation of his legacy. Kina Shell Necklace (Highlands Region) Kina Shell (pearl shell) originated from Torres Strait and was widely accepted and traded in most Highlands communities/villages of PNG. It reached most parts of highlands due to extensive trade for over 1,000 years precontracting colonia contacts. This valuable pearl shell was used for trade, pride price, compensations, store of wealth and symbols of status. Toea Shell Armband (Central) Toea shell consists with a large conus shell attached to 4 strings of colorful beads ending in banana leaves. It was wide accepted and used in coastal communities/villages of Motu and Koita and Trobrian Islands. It was used as a traditional money for the purposes of exchange, pride price and cultural ceremonies. New Ireland Shark Caller A traditional fishman from Kontu people in New Ireland. It is an ancient ritual of singing and calling sharks from the sea using rattles and coconut shells. This practice was deeply spiritual believing shark holds ancestral spirits. It is now celebrated in festivals to preserve their unique culture. Lakatoi (Central Province) A multi hulled sailing canoe built and used by Motu-Koita people especially for long trading journeys. Around September and November taking advantage of the south-east wind the canoe would sail for Kerema. And returns when a load of food at around February and March in the new year when south-west breezes return. Toea Shell Armband (Central)

2026 DENOMINATION DESIGN (150x70mm)

Sir Julius Chan Role: PNG’s First Finance Minister from 1973-1975 and 2nd PM of PNG. Major Achievement: Introduced the national currency, the Kina and Toea, replacing Australian dollars. Significance: Laid the groundwork for PNG's independent monetary/ banking system and financial policy. Sir Julius Chan was born on August 29 1939 on the small island of Tangar, located off the east coast of New Britain Island in the Territory of New Guinea. Born the 5th child of 7 to loving parents just prior to the outbreak of the 2nd world war, his mother Miriam, an indigenous Papua New Guinean, had married his father Chin Pak, a migrant from the Guandong province in China. Together they raised Julius in challenging times and were imprisoned by Japanese soldiers in the latter months of the war. After the war Sir Julius won a scholarship to the Marist College Ashgrove in Brisbane at age 14 where he expe-rienced some of his happiest years. Upon returning from Australia he joined his father in the family shipping business before being elected at age 27 to the Namatanai district of New Ireland Province in the pre independence House of Assembly. He was re-elected in 1972, 77, 82, 87, and 92. During that time he was deputy Prime Minister four times and minister of Finance three times. Sir Julius also held portfolios of Primary Industry and External Affairs and Trade. In 1973 at age 34 he established the PNG banking system and promoted a world of self government and independence for PNG. Seven years later at age 41 Sir Julius was elected Prime Minister of PNG and served for 2 years to 1982. 12 years later he would be re-elected. Prime Minister running on a platform of national security and appropriate economic management and would hold the seat until 1997. Sir Julius would see out his political life as the Governor of New Ireland Province where he would serve from 2007 to his death in 2025. He passed on January 30, 2025, at age 85 while still actively holding his position of Governor and was given a state funeral in Port Moresby following a week of national mourning. 03

FACTS K100 NOTE 09 All K100 in circulation are printed on polymer substrate and still a legal tender There are 4 different polymer series of K100 issued so far First issuance of K100 was in 2005 which was the larger size (150x75mm) Denomination resize (150x70mm) was in 2018 (APEC commemorative issuance) Denomination redesign featuring Sir. Julius Chan was officially released in 2026. There are about 13 security features, most of them can be seen with naked eyes while only few under ultra violet (UV) lights.
