NOTICE NO. 04/GGBM/2006

SUBJECT: REGULATION ON CHECK STANDARDIZATION

Given the need to amend the Regulation on Check Standardization, approved by Notice No. 8/GGBM/99 of June 1, published in the Official Gazette No. 29, Third Series, of July 21, with the objective of introducing security elements into the information constituting the interbank zone in its respective "magnetic band," for the purpose of improving the electronic clearing of checks and other credit instruments, the Bank of Mozambique, under the provisions of Article 43 of Law No. 1/92 of January 3, approves:

SINGLE ARTICLE: The amendment of item IV of letter d) Fourth track of the specifications of the STANDARD CHECK MODEL, annexed to the Regulation on Check Standardization, to read as follows:

ON THE FRONT: ...

d) Fourth track (intended for the printing of magnetic characters), for which strict observance of the following specifications and instructions is required:

   I_ ...

III_ ... IV_ The "magnetization band" comprises 5 fields indicated in the respective model, with the following structure (note that the fields must not be topped by the designations provided):

Field 1: Interbank zone ... Field 2: Account number ... Field 3: Check number ... Field 4: Type of check ... Field 5: Control Digit Separated by a space of 3.175mm and occupies two positions, totaling 6.350mm.

This Notice enters into force immediately and repeals any provisions to the contrary.

Any doubts arising in the interpretation and application of this Notice shall be clarified by the Emission and Payment Systems Department of the Bank of Mozambique.
