Allowing banks to reclassify financial assets for the purpose of trading for a specified period in accordance with the conditions stipulated in the decision

The Central Bank of Egypt permits banks to reclassify financial assets held for trading into available-for-sale or held-to-maturity categories between January 1, 2011, and June 30, 2011, provided the bank has the intent and ability to hold them. This reclassification is based on fair value at the date of transfer, which becomes the new carrying amount, and applies only to debt instruments. Any unrealized losses recognized prior to the reclassification date are not reversed, and fair value declines during this period are not considered impaired for assets moved to the available-for-sale category.
