Amendments to the Friendly Societies Act, 1956

The amendments, effective 1 August 1980, raise the maximum insurance a friendly society may provide on a child's life to R250 for children under 6 and R500 for children aged 6 to under 14; a society must consult its valuator before amending its rules to increase these amounts. The classes of prescribed assets in which at least 40% of a friendly society's total assets must be held now include deposits with, bills, bonds or securities issued or guaranteed by, or loans to or guaranteed by, the Land and Agricultural Bank of South Africa. A copy of the circular is enclosed for the society's auditor, who must also sign the attached acknowledgement form.
