Financial Intelligence Unit Act 2000

The Parliament of The Bahamas enacted this Act to establish the Financial Intelligence Unit as an independent body responsible for receiving, analyzing, and disseminating information related to proceeds of crime. The Unit is empowered to order temporary transaction and account freezes, mandate information production from financial entities, and issue binding suspicious transaction guidelines following mandatory stakeholder consultation. The legislation grants comprehensive civil and criminal liability protections to good faith reporters, ensures strict confidentiality with prescribed penalties for breaches, and establishes clear funding, auditing, and ministerial oversight mechanisms.
