The National Bank of Belgium implements the European Banking Authority guidelines on the management of non-performing and forborne exposures for credit institutions governed by Belgian law and branches of third-country credit institutions. Less significant institutions supervised directly by the NBB must apply these guidelines proportionately, utilizing a simplified governance approach and a collateral valuation threshold of 300,000 EUR for gross NPL values. The guidelines became effective on 30 June 2019, requiring institutions to calculate their NPL ratios using 31 December 2018 as the reference date.
