Circular to Credit Institutions on Dividend Distributions or Share Buybacks

The MFSA applies ECB Recommendation ECB/2020/19 in its entirety to all credit institutions licensed under the Banking Act (Chapter 371 of the Laws of Malta) from 2 April 2020 until at least 1 October 2020. Significant credit institutions are required to refrain from making dividend distributions and performing share buybacks aimed at remunerating shareholders during the COVID-19 related economic shock. Less significant credit institutions are also required not to make discretionary dividend distributions. The MFSA will evaluate the economic situation and consider whether further suspension of dividends is advisable after the specified date.
