Guidelines on the Use of the Central Bank of Kenya Discount Window

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has reviewed its guidelines on the use of its Discount Window for commercial banks, effective July 12, 2011. Banks lending in the interbank market are prohibited from accessing Discount Window funds on the same day, and weekly borrowing from the Discount Window is capped at a bank's statutory cash reserves. The interest rate applicable on the Discount Window will revert to the Central Bank Rate of 6.25 percent. Commercial banks are advised to explore other liquidity avenues, such as liquidating Treasury bills, bonds, or foreign currency positions, before using the Discount Window.
