Joint Communication 4 of 2020: Clarification on regulatory requirements for funeral insurance policies

Insurers issuing funeral insurance policies must cap benefits at R100 000 per life insured per policy, including rider benefits. Limits increase annually by the CPI rate published by Statistics South Africa. Policies entered into before 1 October 2018 must comply with Rule 2A by 1 July 2021, while post-October 2018 policies must comply upon license conversion. Insurers may not impose waiting periods for microinsurance or funeral policies if the policyholder had a similar active policy within the past 31 days.
