National Bank of Ethiopia Quarterly Bulletin Fourth Quarter 2022/23

The National Bank of Ethiopia reports that headline inflation rose to 7.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2022/23, driven by increases in food and non-food prices. Broad money supply (M2) grew by 26.6 percent annually to Birr 2.17 trillion, supported by a 26.6 percent expansion in domestic credit. The banking sector disbursed Birr 113.5 billion in new loans, with agriculture and consumer loans being major beneficiaries, while total outstanding credit reached Birr 1.95 trillion. Federal government fiscal operations recorded a deficit of Birr 70.5 billion against revenue of Birr 111.1 billion and expenditure of Birr 181.6 billion.
