National Bank of Ethiopia Quarterly Bulletin Third Quarter 2021/22

The National Bank of Ethiopia reports that headline inflation rose to 5.6 percent in the third quarter of 2021/22, driven by increases in food and non-food prices. Broad money supply (M2) reached Birr 1.58 trillion, reflecting 25.5 percent annual growth fueled by a 28.8 percent expansion in domestic credit. The average lending interest rate stood at 14.25 percent, while the weighted average yield on Treasury bills increased to 9.23 percent, resulting in negative real interest rates across deposit, lending, and T-bill instruments. The number of operating banks increased to 21, with the total number of bank branches reaching 8,250.
