The Directions amend the Reserve Bank of India (Commercial Banks - Responsible Business Conduct) Directions, 2025, by inserting definitions for electronic banking transactions, negligence, and unauthorized transactions, and by replacing the section on limiting customer liability with new provisions for customer protection. Commercial banks must implement mandatory SMS alerts for transactions over ₹500, provide 24x7 reporting channels, and adhere to resolution timelines of 45 days for domestic and 60 days for cross-border complaints. Customers are entitled to zero liability for losses caused by bank negligence or third-party breaches reported within five days, while a compensation mechanism covers up to 85% of net losses or ₹25,000 for bona fide victims with gross losses up to ₹50,000. These Directions apply to electronic banking transactions undertaken by customers on or after January 1, 2027.
