Reserve Requirements

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka mandates that all licensed commercial banks maintain reserves against Sri Lankan Rupee-denominated deposit liabilities at a rate of four percent. This directive, effective from the reserve maintenance period commencing 1 September 2021, replaces Schedule A of the previous Operating Instructions issued in June 2020. The regulation specifies that required reserves include 100% of margins against certain import letters of credit and a 4% levy on average daily total Rupee deposit liabilities, adjusted by currency holdings.
