Banks must not issue or open new restricted investment accounts (RIAs) as of 1 July 2012, nor accept new funds into existing ones. New restricted Shari’a profit-sharing relationships must be structured as units or shares in a collective investment undertaking (CIU) under Module CIU and Module BC Chapter 9. Existing RIAs may remain open but cannot receive new funds. RIAs structured outside Bahrain by licensees in other jurisdictions are subject to local regulator rules.
