Statistical Notice 2026/08 - Changes to the criteria for monthly form BT reporting

The Bank of England is updating the criteria for monthly Form BT reporting for banks and building societies with a deposit-taking licence. Under the revised criteria, firms required to submit Forms BE, BN, GT, or ER will also be required to submit Form BT monthly, while those not submitting these forms will generally report Form BT quarterly. This change means some firms currently reporting monthly will switch to quarterly submissions. The Bank will update its reporting thresholds guidance and individually notify affected firms of changes to their requirements and the applicable period.

Statistical Notice 2026/08

Overview

The Bank of England is changing the criteria used to determine which firms are required to submit Form BT monthly.

Under the revised criteria, monthly Form BT reporting will generally be required where a firm is also required to submit specified monthly Money and Credit statistical returns. Firms that do not meet these criteria will continue to submit Form BT only quarterly, unless the Bank informs them otherwise.

Background

All banks and building societies with a deposit-taking licence are required to submit Form BT at least quarterly. A subset of these firms is also required to report Form BT monthly.

The Bank periodically reviews these reporting populations to ensure that the reporting burden remains proportionate while still meeting statistical quality requirements.

Following the latest review, the Bank has decided to update the criteria for monthly Form BT reporting. This will mean that going forward, some firms currently submitting Form BT monthly will instead be required to submit it quarterly.

Changes to the criteria for monthly Form BT reporting

The Bank will update its reporting thresholds guidance to reflect the revised criteria.

Under the revised criteria:

  • firms required to submit one or more of Forms BE, BN, GT or ER will also be required to submit Form BT monthly; and
  • firms not required to submit any of these forms will generally be required to submit Form BT quarterly.

The Bank may still, at its discretion, require a firm to submit Form BT monthly, even if it does not submit any of the forms listed above.

Notification of reporting requirement changes

The Bank will contact affected firms individually to confirm any change to their current reporting requirements, and the period from which the change will apply.

The updated reporting thresholds guidance will also explain the notice periods that apply when a firm’s reporting requirements change. The notice period for removing a monthly reporting requirement may be shorter than the notice period for introducing one.

Further information

The updated reporting thresholds guidance will be made available on the Bank's website.
