Instruction on the Structure and Use of the International Bank Account Number (IBAN)

Based on Article 2, paragraph 3, item c) of the Law on the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina («Official Gazette of BiH» numbers: 1/97, 29/02, 13/03, 14/03, 9/05, 76/06 and 32/07) and Article 52 of the Regulation of the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina UV number: 120/05 dated 29 June 2005, the Governing Board of the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina at its 6th meeting on 21 May 2009 adopted

I N S T R U C T I O N

ON THE STRUCTURE AND USE
OF THE INTERNATIONAL BANK
ACCOUNT NUMBER (IBAN)

1. By this Instruction, the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina (hereinafter: the Central Bank) prescribes the structure and use of the international bank account number (IBAN) for clients of the Central Bank and the Central Bank.

2. The structure of the IBAN is determined in accordance with the international standard ISO – 13616:1997 and consists of a total of 20 alphanumeric characters, as follows:
   - the first two characters BA are the alphabetic characters for Bosnia and Herzegovina determined in accordance with the international standard ISO 3166;
   - the next two characters are 39 - the check number determined for Bosnia and Herzegovina;
   - the following 16 numeric characters are the transaction account of each client of the Central Bank, respectively the transaction account of the Central Bank.

3. When a client of the Central Bank gives a payment instruction, it is obliged, in addition to the instruction for the IBAN, to give the instruction for the entry of the account to which the funds are deposited.

4. The Central Bank will, after the entry into force of this Instruction, deliver a written notice to each of its clients regarding its IBAN.

5. The Central Bank is obliged to check the correctness of the structure and the accuracy of the check numbers of the IBAN and the account number upon receipt of funds in favor of the account of its client. If the IBAN is not specified in the payment order or does not have the prescribed structure or if the check numbers or accounts are incorrect, the Central Bank proceeds to the complaint process in accordance with internal procedures.

6. This Instruction enters into force on the day of adoption, and will be applied from 1 June 2009 and will be published in the «Official Gazette of BiH» and the official gazettes of the Entities and the Brčko District.
