AUSTRAC steps up supervision of virtual assets sector as reforms take effect

AUSTRAC has launched two targeted supervisory campaigns to assess anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing risk management across Australia’s virtual assets sector ahead of landmark regulatory reforms. The initiatives directly engage 36 over-the-counter crypto-to-cash providers and 27 local exchanges to evaluate their business models, governance arrangements, and readiness for expanded compliance obligations. Under the new framework, the regulatory scope broadens from digital currency exchanges to virtual asset service providers, encompassing custody, brokerage, and other crypto-related services while requiring stricter risk management practices.
