Circular No. 1323 — Brazilian Savings and Loan System (SBPE) — Savings Booklet

The Central Bank of Brazil authorizes savings deposit-taking institutions to classify accounts as inactive if the balance is equal to or less than one National Treasury Obligation (OTN) and no deposits or withdrawals have occurred for 12 consecutive months. Inactive accounts are debited by an amount equal to 0.2 OTN, limited to the existing balance, after crediting period earnings and following a mandatory three-month period after notifying the account holder. These criteria apply to accounts previously classified as inactive, and financial agents may only set minimum balance and transaction limits if stipulated in the account opening contract.
