Guidelines on the Use of the Term "Independent" by Financial Advisers

Licensed and exempt financial advisers must not use "independent" unless they receive no biased commissions, operate free from product restrictions, and have no conflicts of interest. Representatives are prohibited from using the term if the adviser restricts it. Advisers must ensure compliance with FAR regulation 21 and demonstrate independence before using the term. Contraventions constitute offences for both advisers and representatives.
