Investments by Foreign Portfolio Investors in Government Securities – Amendments to the regulatory framework

The Reserve Bank of India withdraws the short-term investment limit, security-wise limit, and concentration limit for Foreign Portfolio Investors investing in Government Securities under the General Route. The sub-categories of investment limits, 'general' and 'long-term', are merged into single limits for Central Government Securities and State Government Securities, with specific caps set at ₹4,62,490 crore and ₹1,53,043 crore for the first half of FY 2026-27, and ₹4,77,006 crore and ₹1,64,242 crore for the second half. Additionally, new issuances of 15-year, 30-year, and 40-year tenors for Government Securities, along with specific Sovereign Green Bonds and listed existing securities, are designated as 'specified securities' under the Fully Accessible Route. These directions come into effect immediately.
