Monitoring compliance with the recirculation of euro banknotes and coins – cash supervision

Cash handlers recirculating euro banknotes must use sorting machines tested by a Eurosystem national central bank within the last twelve months and included in the ECB's list of successfully tested hardware and software combinations. These handlers are required to submit two half-yearly reports within two months of each reporting period's expiry, detailing the number of banknotes processed and recirculated, the types and quantities of handling machines used, and the volume processed by cash recycling machines broken down by denomination. For euro coins, handlers must utilize processing machines included in the ETSC's list of those with valid positive detection test reports. Compliance with coin recirculation is monitored through annual reports submitted to the European Commission and Member States, which must specify the types and locations of coin processing machines and the number of coins processed per year and denomination for each machine.
