Norges Bank retains 1000-krone banknote as legal tender but halts new orders

Norges Bank has decided that banks can no longer order new 1000-krone banknotes, a measure that will gradually reduce the number of these notes in circulation as existing notes are handed in or worn out. The 1000-krone note remains legal tender and can be used for payments as before, with the possibility for Norges Bank to allow new orders again in emergencies. This decision follows a review of cash's role in payment contingency and digital literacy, confirming that cash remains an important means of payment.
