Norms for the Accounting Recognition of Losses on Loans and Accounts Receivable of Insurance Companies

Insurance companies incorporated in El Salvador, foreign branches, and insurance cooperative associations must recognize loans as losses if unsecured loans exceed twelve months or secured loans exceed twenty-four months without judicial execution. Accounts receivable older than twelve months or inactive must also be written off. Write-offs against restructuring reserves or expense accounts must occur before publishing semi-annual financial statements. Recovered amounts follow a specific order: prior interest, current interest, then principal. Recoveries in the same period reverse the write-off, while subsequent recoveries credit non-operational income or equity. Written-off assets remain in off-balance sheet accounts until recovery.
