The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre (DFCRC), with Council of Financial Regulators (CFR) agencies, are establishing a new multi-stream program of work to address barriers to tokenised finance adoption and support industry exploration of new ideas in wholesale markets. This program includes enhanced industry-regulator collaboration, exploration of a digital financial market infrastructure (DFMI) regulatory sandbox, and continued industry-led work on interoperable commercial bank deposit tokens. The RBA will also consult with industry on potential changes to existing settlement infrastructure and Exchange Settlement Account (ESA) access arrangements, further assess the potential role of tokenised wholesale central bank digital currency (wCBDC), and examine how innovations in tokenised central bank and private money could improve wholesale cross-border payments.
