The National Reserve Bank of Tonga urges the public to remain vigilant against rising Ponzi and pyramid schemes that disguise themselves as legitimate investment opportunities and promise high, guaranteed returns. These illegal activities are classified as unauthorized banking business under the Banking Act 2020, making participants and organizers liable to fines up to $1,000,000 or imprisonment for up to 30 years. The regulator advises citizens to report suspicious offers to the NRBT or Tonga Police and to consult the Financial Markets Authority of New Zealand for lists of known fake platforms and scams.
