Fraudulent Use of Canada Post Money Orders (FinCEN Advisory - Issue 34)
FinCEN warns that counterfeit Canada Post Money Orders are being used in internet and Nigerian scams to defraud U.S. citizens. Legitimate money orders have a maximum value of $999.99, whereas reported counterfeits typically range in the tens of thousands. Authentic documents feature a beaver-shaped watermark, rainbow printing, and the toll-free verification number 1-800-563-0444, while counterfeits lack the watermark and display fraudulent phone numbers.
