Imposition of Special Measure Against North Korea as a Jurisdiction of Primary Money Laundering Concern

The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network prohibits U.S. financial institutions from opening or maintaining correspondent accounts for, or on behalf of, North Korean banking institutions. The rule further prohibits U.S. financial institutions from processing transactions for the correspondent account of a foreign bank if such a transaction involves a North Korean financial institution. Covered institutions must apply special due diligence to their foreign correspondent accounts to guard against their use for processing transactions involving North Korean financial institutions. This final rule becomes effective on December 9, 2016.
