Handling institutions must immediately record the bearer's details and notify police authorities if the total value of counterfeit foreign coins and notes presented for exchange equals or exceeds United States dollars 200. If the total value is less than United States dollars 200, institutions may void the items and retain them after ascertaining the bearer acted without malicious intent. Detained counterfeit items may be turned over to the Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Justice or the International Criminal Police Organization for examination. These regulations apply to foreign travelers holding and exchanging such counterfeit currency.
