SR 21-2: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Suspicious Activity Reporting and Other Anti-Money Laundering Considerations

Financial institutions supervised by the Federal Reserve must report suspicious activity under the Bank Secrecy Act. They must file SARs with narratives limited to 20,000 characters, using CSV attachments for tabular data instead of repeating information. Institutions must retain supporting documentation for five years and file continuing activity SARs if law enforcement requests account maintenance. Negative news alone does not mandate a SAR, and institutions are not required to terminate relationships after filing.
