The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is ceasing its discretionary publication of unverified consumer complaint narratives and associated data visualizations in the Consumer Complaint Database. This decision is based on the minimal utility of such publications, which often cause confusion, provide misleading data, and present only one side of an issue without verifying allegations. Previously published narratives are now considered in the public domain for Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) purposes and are being proactively disclosed in the CFPB’s FOIA Reading Room. The CFPB will continue to collect, monitor, and respond to complaints, review company responses, and share information with other regulators.
