Custody of Investment Company Assets Outside the United States

The Securities and Exchange Commission adopts new rule 17f-7 and amendments to rules 17f-5, 7d-1, and 17f-4 to govern the custody of investment company assets with foreign securities depositories. The new rule permits funds to maintain assets with an eligible securities depository provided the primary custodian performs a risk analysis, monitors custody risks on a continuing basis, and notifies the fund of material changes. The amendments to rule 17f-5 update standards for foreign bank custodians and conforming changes are made to rules 7d-1 and 17f-4. The rules become effective on June 12, 2000, with a compliance date of July 2, 2001.
