Disclosure of Costs and Expenses by Insurance Company Separate Accounts Registered as Unit Investment Trusts That Offer Variable Annuity Contracts

The Securities and Exchange Commission proposes amendments to Form N-4 to require insurance company separate accounts registered as unit investment trusts offering variable annuity contracts to disclose the range of expenses for all Portfolio Companies in the fee table, rather than the expenses for each individual fund. The proposal modifies the expense example by increasing the hypothetical initial investment from $1,000 to $10,000 and requiring an example based on maximum expenses, while permitting the inclusion of detailed per-fund disclosures if helpful. Additional changes include requiring disclosure of all recurring fees, adding a caption for Distribution and/or Service (12b-1) Fees, and mandating the disclosure of maximum guaranteed charges for each fee item. Comments on these proposed rule changes are due by June 14, 2002.
