Mutual Fund Redemption Fees

The Securities and Exchange Commission adopts rule 22c-2, permitting registered open-end investment companies to impose a redemption fee of up to two percent on shares redeemed within seven days of purchase, with the fee retained by the fund. The rule requires most funds to enter into written agreements with financial intermediaries, obligating them to provide shareholder identity and transaction information upon request and to execute instructions restricting future purchases or exchanges. Money market funds, exchange-traded funds, and funds that affirmatively permit market timing are exempt from these requirements. The rule becomes effective on May 23, 2005, with a compliance date of October 16, 2006.
